J’s Lunch Counter HAPPY HOUR – Episode 14 (September 23, 2016)
Episode 14 is a solo show that I recorded for the end of the week, which means one thing?.HAPPY HOUR! Today on our second Happy Hour edition, I recap the week in news and politics. I begin with candid thoughts on the Trump’s ongoing outreach to black voters using, of all people, Don King as a surrogate on the campaign trail, as well as Don King’s controversial use of the n-word, and the thing I found most troubling about this entire show. I also take a look at two new shootings in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Charlotte, North Carolina, of black men at the hands of the police. I explore the media coverage and the ensuing outrage over these killings, and I also spend some time attempting to encourage those who have been emotionally impacted by the ongoing imagery of this violence. I discuss the idea of vicarious race-based trauma, and how it can impact those who consume and experience videos and photos and articles and social media posts around this violence.
Today, I also debut our new Mailbag segment, where I answer questions submitted by listeners of this show. Today’s questions include my thoughts on which of the four upcoming debates will be the most important to the overall outcome of the election, who will be the winners and losers of the Republican party in the event Donald Trump loses the election, whether or not I can give credit to Donald Trump for his attempts at black outreach, and finally, whether or not Hillary Clinton is responsible for starting the birtherism issue against President Obama. If you have a question you want to submit for a future mailbag segment, email the show at jslunchcounter@gmail.com with your name, city and your question!
